HP 9 covers waste containing viable microorganisms or their toxins that are known, or reliably believed, to cause disease in humans or other living organisms. It is the property that most often sits behind healthcare and laboratory waste streams.
It is recorded on the consignment note as a hazard code. As with the rest, assignment is a determination about the actual waste rather than a property its EWC entry confers.
