EWC Code

20 03 01 mixed municipal waste

This is a code under chapter 20 03 — Other municipal wastes of the UK European Waste Catalogue, used on waste transfer notes to classify the type of waste being transferred.

20 03 01 is general waste: the residual fraction left after anything separately collected has been taken out. It is what a commercial bin collection is coded as, and it covers household waste and the commercial, industrial and institutional waste that looks like it.

Unlike most of the codes it sits near, this one is absolute rather than mirror — nothing about the entry itself turns on an assessment of what is in it. That makes it the easiest code to reach for, which is why it ends up on loads that belong elsewhere.

Where this waste usually comes from

  • Commercial and household general-waste collections
  • Office, retail and hospitality residual waste
  • The residual fraction from a site with segregated streams alongside it

The common mistake with 20 03 01

Using it as a default for waste that was in fact segregated, or for construction waste. Green waste is 20 02 01, mixed packaging is 15 01 06, and anything arising from building work belongs in chapter 17 even when it is mixed.
