EWC Code
16 01 03 end-of-life tyres
This is a code under chapter 16 01 — End-of-life vehicles from different means of transport (including off-road machinery) and wastes from dismantling of end-of-life vehicles and vehicle maintenance (except 13, 14, 16 06 and 16 08) of the UK European Waste Catalogue, used on waste transfer notes to classify the type of waste being transferred.
16 01 03 covers tyres taken out of service — car, van, HGV, agricultural and off-road — as a waste in their own right, whether they come off a vehicle being repaired or one being scrapped. The entry is absolute and non-hazardous, so there is no assessment to make about the tyre itself.
What the code carries instead is a handling expectation. Tyres are recorded and moved as their own stream rather than absorbed into a general load, and the chapter they sit in reflects where they come from: vehicle maintenance and dismantling.
Where this waste usually comes from
- Tyre bays, garages and fast-fit centres
- Fleet and haulage maintenance
- Vehicle dismantlers
The common mistake with 16 01 03
Letting tyres ride out in a general or mixed load. They are a separate stream by code, and a whole end-of-life vehicle is a different entry again — 16 01 04, which is hazardous.
